Actually I do model. I have chosen the “transition era,” so that I may enjoy the best of both worlds. I am modeling the ATSF, SP and Great Northern.
The nice thing is, in modeling the transition era, the scenes are appropriate for later eras as well. I have built one “modern” train comsist from 1976. At 89 cars, 60′ 08″ long and weighing over 23 lbs, it is the biggest train I operate. 1976 was the year I was promoted so I modeled a typical train of the day…
But, I share your sentiment. Out of about 75 locomotives only 24 or so are diesels.
And, as far as model sound goes, the steamers can’t be beat. I love the Tsunami sound modules, especially those effects beyond the usual chuffs, whistles, bell, etc.. Blower, air pump, water doors, injectors, dynamo, air brakes, cylinder cocks, power reverse, etc. Its all there. Very nice.
Broadway Limited engines have nice sound as well. The German made Lok-Sound is supposed to be a nice sounding unit as well. I have two SP AC12′s waiting for their Lok-Sound upgrade, as well as an AC4 and an AC5 awaiting Broadway Limited up-grade.
You can use Scenic Express or Woodland Scenics Turf or they also have a Grass Mat that comes in different sizes and grass shades you can lay down first.
Tight space means getting creative… but first explore your options, any space in the loft, round the garage, could you make a fold away or hoist a layout up to the ceiling. If you really are stuck with basically the size of a door… why not go for an alpine scene so you get at least two levels, some tunnels and bridges and a small shunting yard and maybe include a turntable.
Help with Model Train Layout info?
A terrific job has landed in my lap. I will begin working for a gentleman who started building model train layouts in his spare time…and now has the opportunity to build a pretty big full time business. I will be doing everything from screwing down the initial piece of plywood to the installation of the finished product in the customers homes. I have NO experience at all but, I am am a quick learner and this man thinks I will perfect for the job. Is there anyone here that can direct me to some places (websites?) where I can learn about Train layouts in a hurry. I don’t know about the different size trains or the major companies that market them at all. I have heard of Lionel but that is the only thing I know in relation to model trains. Oh, I am so lost here. Any help would be appreciated. I am feeling super inadequete. Thank you
Thank you so much! I am off to read!
steam locomotives only model train layout?
If you were to build a model train layout, would it be steam only?I personally don’t care for diesel locomotives. They don’t have all the neat sounds a steamer has.All you hear is a steady drone of a diesel engine.Steam, they have all kinds of chuffs, chugs.I love the sound of a steamer taking off.It starts slow, then as it builds steam,it gets faster.I love steamers, and my layout will only have steam engines. That’s the way railroads started, and that’s the way they should be.
Stuck for space for model train layout.?
Got a model train 00 scale for Christmas but i have only got about 2 meters by a meter to work with anyone got some photos of other small layouts or plans? It would be cool to get scenery and detail in the layout as well.

Know where I can get any money?
Have you tried the Hornby Website. My hubby had a look for ideas for his trainset which is still in boxes LOL.
I have looked up the websites address for you. Hope your model building goes well.
Good luck

Interesting work !! I’ve built 2 railroads for home, and work on another club-railroad here in California.
Here are 2 GREAT websites:
