The best starter set is an O27 set by Lionel, or K Line, oe “Mikes Train House”. all of these use the same track. The track and trains are very durable, and can be “played with” without fear of breakage. The O27 size makes it easier for your son to put the cars back on the track. Much less frustration, much more fun.The smaller, more breakable HO scale train sets will end up destroyed in the bottom of the toy box within a week.Go with the bigger O scale sets. These sets will cost more, twice the price of an HO set,but the value is there. Your son will continue to use it,because he can handle it,and it will combine it with his existing toys . And if it doesn’t pan out , there is a resale value . You can’t give away a used HO toy train set .Go to your local hobby shop, not a Walmart or Toys r us. The hobby shop gives you service, advice and support

    I don’t know, but that’s fuckin’ cool. :)
Actually, what about paperclips and fishing line? Paperclips work well if you have the type of ceiling with liftable tiles and metal bars/dividers for the tiles.

My dad used a mixture of colors on his — browns, greys, white, a bit of black and some various shades of green. It looked fantastic. You might want to start with a base using a sponging technique, building up color gradually. Step back a lot to view your work from the same distance you’d see it on your layout (I’m assuming you’re painting it right in front of you).

My dad handmade his mountains by finding rocks with lots of texture and making molds. He applied each molded rock to a papier-mache-type foundation (made of chicken wire and plaster). He even created the tunnel. After the plaster dried, he started painting. He even added real moss near the base to simulate grass. His entire layout looked like a real miniature world. He even weathered the trains and buildings to avoid that just-bought plastic look.

My advice would be to download a photo of a mountain similar to the look you’re going for and try to emulate it.

We’ve had Thomas for nearly 3 years of fairly tough use. Even though our son and his friends abused the set (tracks, engine, cars), all parts survived. I can’t think of anything that broke.

How do i paint a mountain on a train set layout?
I have a train set layout that I am working on and I made a large mountain on it. I would like to paint it and make it look as realistic as possible, not just solid gray. Maybe have some grays, whites blacks and more, but how do I apply it so that it looks real?

opinions: How much better is Thomas the train set/table compared to Imaginarium?
My nephew has an Imaginarium train table set & they are not really satisfied with it. The tracks do not stay together well & many of the little pieces were broken within a couple of months. (He still plays with it and likes it,though) The Thomas ones are more expensive. Is it just the name or or they made better?
    Thanks!

How should I suspend my toy train set above my cubicle at work?
I bought a Christmas-type train set with thicker tracks. I would like to hang this from the ceiling at my work, but I can’t figure out the best way. Help?
Yes, I do have the removable tiles and the brackets, so I can hide wire if I need to!

How do I find out how much my model train set is worth?
I have an old model train set, possibly an antique, I’m not exactly sure, how do I find out how much it is worth? Thank you for your time!

What would be a good train set for an 8 to boy?
My son is turning 8 soon and still loves trains. I want to get him a nice train set for his birthday, something a little more sophisticated then the Thomas the tank Engine stuff as I feel that he is a little too old for Thomas now. Does anyone know of a good starter set for a boy his age. I’ve looked at wal-mart but all the sets are for 4 yo kids!
Oops, sorry this was supposed to be posted under toys!
