Model Trains Weathering

How To Weather Model Train Scenery

When it comes to weathering, most people only consider the trains and not the model train scenery. If you are purchasing buildings from a store, you will want to weather them as well in order to keep with the appearance. After all, it will look odd for the weathered train to be traveling through a pristine environment. If the train is traveling through the city, the train and the city should both look just as worn by smog and graffiti artists in order to make it look as real as possible.

The first thing you can do in order to weather model train scenery is to use a mixture of paint thinner and a dark gray paint. This paint should be mixed into an airbrush gun in order to spray a light coat of paint that looks like it has been accumulating for years. The best way to apply the paint is in wide sweeping motions side to side. Make sure the room is well ventilated before attempting anything of this sort. For best results, do not try to finish the weathering all at once. Apply one coat, allow it to dry and then apply a second coat. Use as many coats as you feel necessary to create just the right look.

Another city element you may want to add to your model train scenery is graffiti. You can buy different pieces of graffiti from the hobby shop, or online. The graffiti you buy will be in a decal form, so you may want to spray it with the same formula you used on the building it will be on. This will cover the edges and give the graffiti the worn look it usually has in the city. Graffiti is also a good addition to trailer cars. It gives the appearance the cars have been docked in the city rail station for a period of time.

Rail stations that are a part of desert scenery should have a look as if they have seen many different sand storms over the years. A good way to accomplish a sand worn appearance is to shoot sand at the structure. Mix together fine grain sand and water in the bowl of your airbrush gun and use it to blast the structure. Sanding the structure may be too harsh as you can simply scrape the paint off rather than adding a look of wear. Another good element in these conditions is to airbrush on a medium brown color to the metal roof in order to give the rusted over look expected in the climate.

Creating realistic looking model train scenery is an endeavor every model railroader has. It is a skill, which has to be learned over time in order to get it exactly right. The best way to learn is to find as much information as possible about weathering and creating your own structures. Practicing what you learn is the ultimate way to learn. Have fun and explore new ideas you may have in order to decide which methods work best for you.

For those who are in love with model trains, model train shows really are a great idea. Not only will you get to show off your modeling prowess, you will also get to witness the handiwork of others firsthand. On top of that, there are all types of other events that occur at these model train shows, and they're nothing that you want to miss!

First of all you have the many different varieties of train, from the garden variety, all the way to the smaller models. You will also see different types of scenery. You would be amazed at how great people are at perspective modeling. This is a method of modeling where a person is able to make it appear as though there is more space on the model than there actually is. There are a few different ways that they can do this, and when they pull it off, it is really amazing.

Luckily, after the 1930's the NMRA set standards by which model railroads were to be built. Before this happened, it was impossible for one model train to run on someone else's railroad. Now that it is possible, people are able to bring their trains without disassembling their tracks.

At these shows you will find that there are tons of different types of model train sets on display, and you could spend an entire day just looking at half of them. You can either bring your own train set, or you can just take in the view. Either way, you are perfectly welcome at a model train show, whether you're a veteran modeler, or just a beginner.

In addition to everything else, you will be able to attend clinics where you will be taught the proper way to go about modeling. Whether you're wanting to run your model train through a tunnel, or learn how to control it through a computer program, you will learn everything that you could possibly need to know at these clinics. But hurry up, they fill up fast!

Some events at the model railroad shows don't have anything to do with the railroad. You might get to enjoy coffee, cookies, and even contests. Then you'll have the banquets that take place, as per the entry fee that you probably paid to get in. These shows are truly amazing, and if you have never been to one there hasn't been a better time, especially considering the standards that have been put in place by the NMRA.

Look online to see if there is a model railroad show occurring near you anytime soon. You might actually be surprised at the things that are happening right in your hometown. From sharing your hobby with others, to seeing what others have accomplished, you're sure to have a great time at a model railroad show!

Track Layout Ideas for your Model Train

For the model train enthusiast, purchasing the rolling stock is only the start of what will become an extensive, and possibly life changing project - maybe very costly, certainly very time consuming, but thoroughly enjoyable.

The major part establishing a model railroad project is the design and implementation of the layout – the diorama with scenery, structures and appropriate scale track for operating the trains.

The size of the layout you can design, build and operate depends on the amount of room in which you have to set it up. Some layouts can be quite small - shelf-top designs that can be accommodated in a very small space. Others can fill part of a room, or even a whole room or basement.

For a small, simple layout, a table will usually be adequate but most model railroaders aim to establish larger, permanent layouts. These will usually require construction of suitable benches, often fixed to the walls of the room to provide a high degree of stability.

An important aspect of any model train setup is the arrangement of the track itself. There are at least four basic layout patterns for setting out the track, and countless variations of both track configuration and subsequent station placement.

Four of the more common basic patterns are:

* point to point - this is merely a straight line of track with a station at each end, with trains going from the station at one end to the other station;

* continuous loop – in its simplest form this is either a circle or an oval and the trains move around it continuously, but it could be modified into a ‘dogbone’ shape by pulling two opposite sides of the circle or oval together, giving a double track appearance in the middle with a smaller circular shape at either end;

* out and back – where the train leaves the single station, travels around a pear-shaped layout and returns to the original station;

* station yard only – where a single station is surrounded by a number of short, interconnected tracks, providing great opportunities for shunting.

From these four basic patterns, there are countless variations. Some possibilities are:

* combining two or more of the four basic patterns, for example adding an ‘out and back’ at one or both ends of a ‘point to point’ layout;

* adding double track to any of the first three basic layouts to allow two or more trains to operate at the same time;

* adding branch lines, allowing an increase in the number of stations;

* arranging a continuous loop as a figure-of-eight, even elevating one track over the other rather than having the crossing at the same level;

* using multiple levels, allowing the use of more track, and thus more activity, in small areas;

* adding station yards, with adequate standing tracks, to any of the configurations.

The number of possible variations you incorporate into your track layout will only be limited by the space you have available, your time [and your patience] and, of course, the size of your wallet.

The Famous Bachmann Model Trains

One of the most famous names in model train history are the Bachmann model trains. The history of the company which made Bachmann a household name goes back way before they started making model trains. The company goes as far back as 1833, though they did not start making model trains until 1966 when the N scale model train started to gain popularity in the United States. Having a history of creating plastic products, the company was perfectly suited to create trains and accessories, which were sold in a plastic shell that was their trademark. Plasticville USA was the first model train product, which put the company into the minds of model railroaders.

Plasticville USA was something, which was sold previous to the first Bachmann model train. These were plastic buildings and other accessories, which would fit in with the trains being sold by other companies. While they were not producing any model trains themselves, it did not prevent them from being known in every home as having fine model train products. These products are still sold in conjunction with model train sets by Lionel to this day. While some may argue the pieces are nothing but mere toys, it opened the door to the ornate layouts created to this day.

While the N scale was the original line of Bachmann models, they quickly made changes in order to expand into the HO scale. They could foresee at the time the HO scale would become the most popular scale to date, which it has. Unfortunately for the company, they were not positioned to sell globally and were losing money. Bachmann Bros. sold the company to Kader who was the manufacturer of Bachmann products. From this sale, Bachmann industries was born and the company began selling globally. Even with a dwindling interest in model trains, the company was able to stay profitable.

In order to appeal to a broader market, the Bachmann model train company came out with a new product line called Spectrum. The Spectrum line was kept completely separate from the Bachmann line in order to cement the product as a luxury model train line. They did not want there to be any relation between the luxury Spectrum line and the Bachmann industries toy model trains which had sold up until that point. These trains offered much more detail at a much higher price. Made of metal with plastic gears, the company was able to keep costs down while building revenue from those who were serious about model railroading.

As an effort to reach the middle of the road, Bachmann model trains began selling Bachmann Plus in 1992. These trains had more detail than the regular Bachmann line, but not nearly as much as the Spectrum line. The creation of the line signified the move of production to China. Eventually the Bachmann plus line was dissolved and was replaced by the silver series. This is the middle grade that is sold today by Bachmann industries for those who aspire to have the Spectrum series, but cannot quite afford it yet.

(1)    The Truth About G Scale. Many people have come to accept G scale coming from the word garden. G scale actually comes from the term Gros which is a German word for big or large. The reason why so many people call them garden trains is because they are used as outside trains. Layouts include plants and grass from the gardens people have in their homes.

(2)    History of Model Trains. Toy model trains started out as novelty toys for children. These toys followed shortly after trains were used as modes of transportation and delivery. These toys did not have very much detail. As time went on, adults became interested in the model trains and an entire industry was born.

(3)    High Society Model Trains. In the Victorian era, there were many different social clubs, which met to talk about model trains. It was considered highly exclusive to have your own model train set with an elaborate layout. The prices of the trains put them out of the hands of common people making it trendy to own them.

This became a problem in a time when Germany became the enemy of the world and all production was halted. This has given way to aluminum and stainless steel as options many people prefer. It has become popular for those who have the money in order to have fun with their children, or simply to have a model that is easier to work on.
