HOW TO BUILD SCENES FOR YOUR HO SCALE MODEL TRAIN LAYOUT
Mountains and landscape terrains for your HO scale model train layout are easily made by using styrofoam blocks from packing used by manufacturers. Small blocks of wood may also be used to make HO scale model train mountains and hills. After attaching the styrofoam and wood pieces, you will then need to form screen wire over the styrofoam and wood.
You are now read to mix the celluclay II (instant papier mache). The mixture should be pliable, you will now press the mixture (a thin layer) into the screen wire.
Painting your HO scale model train mountain will be the next step. If using a water based paint i. e. acrylic, it is not necessary to wait for the celluclay II (instant papier mache) to dry. If using an oil base paint, you will need to wait for the surface to be dry. Drying time usually takes 24 to 48 hours, however, you may speed up the drying time by using a hair dryer.
Plaster may also be applied to your HO scale model train mountain by using the same method. I prefer the celluclay II (instant papier mache) because of it being much lighter in weight.

The huge number of different people who use model trains means that manufacturers have made tracks and trains in just about every size conceivable. It doesn't matter whether you have a whole back yard or just the top of your desk. O is one of the most popular sizes of model trains, at about a 1:48 scale ratio in relation to real trains. These use 1 1/4" gauge tracks. Just like G scale trains, O models are often used for outdoor displays. But not everyone has the space for a garden railroad, or the time to maintain it. If you'd like something a little smaller, but still nicely detailed, you're after an Ho Model Train. About half the size of O scale trains, at about 1:87 of a real one, HO stands for half O. These use standard gauge train tracks, and are very easy to find. They're a very popular choice for floor layouts, and are suitable for creative ones that use plenty of track, but they don't take up too much space. They're still big enough to be durable, too. These trains offer a good balance of the detail of the larger scales of train and the smaller space requirement of the tiny models such as N scale trains. Because of this, they have managed to remain the most popular scale. This scale did not become popular overnight; when they were first introduced to hobbyists in the UK in the 1930s, they failed to catch on due to the popularity of OO scale trains. For model railway trains to look good on the track, they need to have some type of building and scenery present also. The best way to know how many houses and building you will need is to design everything on paper first. This will let you know where all the objects need to be placed and how many you need to create or buy. Some people like to buy a few pieces of scenery while they are creating the rest themselves. Remember to ensure that everything runs smoothly on your track before creating scenery. There is no point spending your time on the scenery when the trains are not functioning right. The first priority always needs to be a functioning model railway track.
