There are many reasons for choosing the HO model train scale. It is now the most popular of all the model train scales in the hobby. This means that you get a wide variety of choice from both model trains and accessories. This is often not allocated when you choose another model train scale, as they are not so popular. This is the first reason for choosing the HO scale.
The second reason is that the HO model train scales let you get maximum use from whatever space you have available at home. Whether you have a spare room or need to design your track layout in your garage, the HO scale can accommodate you. It is great as it gives you many options for establishing your model railroad, regardless of the limited space you have.
For many people the model train hobby was not an option before the HO scale was produced. The model trains used to be much larger which meant the tracks would take up a huge amount of space. Unless people had large homes, they were not able to construct the track and layouts. This was one of the reasons that the HO model train scale was created. It caters for people who have more reasonably sized homes and who have a strong interest in the hobby.
The next reason to choose HO scale model trains is that they measure 1/87th of the real thing. On top of this, the track size is 16.5 millimetres between the rails. This is a perfect scale for a model train and lets you customise a number of other features around the track.
The next reason for choosing the HO scale is that you can find a huge number of pre-built train sets that you can buy. This lets complete beginners get started in the hobby right away. It is much harder to find pre-built model train layouts in the other scales. You can find them, but the range of choice is very limited.
With the HO train scale, you can choose from many different designs and many different manufacturers. As I said above, the HO scale is very popular which brings in many different manufacturers. This means that the choice is wider and the costs get driven down.
As such, the HO scale is the perfect choice for someone completely new to the hobby. It is also perfect for experienced model train enthusiasts, as there is so much selection on offer. You can find a wide array of track sections and scenery that can be easily added to your current track.
Not only this, but the range of model train available on the HO is also very vast. You can choose from model steam trains, locomotive or electric model trains. There are also a large number of special edition model trains built for the HO model scale.

For the really adventurous model trains enthusiast, the large scale garden model trains are probably the one for you. You can use your backyard for the landscape of your model trains. What is the key to a successful ho scale model train layout? Is it a bunch of expensive ho scale model train engines racing around the train track or possibly the gauge you choose? I believe the key to successful model railroading is creating the model railroad to fit your personal tastes.
There are many types of scenes you can create for your ho scale model train set. Do you like urban scenes? If so, you might want to build an ho scale model train layout with a huge city and have your ho scale model trains running through city buildings and stopping at a large urban model train station. Your ho scale model train could weave its way through downtown on its way to the many houses you construct for the suburb. You could even have more than one ho scale model train station.
Perhaps you like rural settings. You can have your ho scale model train work its way through a country landscape consisting of farms and ranches. Your ho scale model train will have cattle cars to pick up the livestock at each of the ranches where your model train stops. The farms might have an old white farmhouse and a big red barn straight off a picture you would see in a book. The scenery will have many varieties of trees around the farmhouse. As your ho scale model train leaves the farm, it will travel through crop field scenery you have created on its way to the processing plants. The possibilities of a rural ho scale model train layout are endless and only limited by your imagination.
My personal favorite ho scale model train layouts are hills and mountains. There is nothing like seeing that ho scale locomotive coming around the curve out of the tunnel in the mountain you have built from scratch. Another favorite mountain scene is the ho scale model train going over a bridge of a deep gorge through the mountains on its way up the tracks. You can put all kinds of pine trees in these mountain scenes to make them lifelike.
We could go on forever but, hopefully I have spurred on your imagination and possibly even given you some ideas to make your ho scale model train layout special to you and those who get the opportunity to watch your trains in action. Model trains are not only for kids: Adults are very much a part of this world. Consider joining a local model train club. Model trains are some of the most enduring toys of all. They are so enduring that even adults love them. Model trains are offered in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors. These models often feature sophisticated electronic components that make them elegant and realistic in operation. In fact, the latest models are controlled by computers.
Model trains are fun for both young and old--men and women. The hobby bridges the generation gap and can be a great way to bring the family together! Model trains are a very interactive hobby, where users can create elaborate model railroad layouts. Modelers develop numerous skills associated with modeling trains. Many people enjoy putting together a model train display, in a landscape or village setting.
Model train layouts are way more compelling when there are people doing it together. Every person comes with a different skill: wiring, modelling, painting, kit-bashing, computer programming, painting or air-brushing; decals, historical accuracy, mechanics, design, sculpting, making tiny trees, tiny rocks, or tiny people. This is why model railroad clubs are so popular. You can find a local club by doing a Google search. All clubs welcome new model railroaders.
A key aspect of joining a club, is to do 'realistic' operation. This is where the model railroad uses real world like operating rules. Trains are run according to the schedule with passenger trains getting priority over freight trains. Also, local freights are assembled at the yards and run to service the surrounding industries. A 'fast clock' is used so that 24 hours may be compressed into a 3 hour operating session. Join a club and remember that model railroading is fun!
Most often model trains are collected according to scale. A scale is a ratio expressed in terms of one unit on the model equals a specified number of units in real life. The most popular scale is HO at 1/87 of real size. Model trains are an amazing hobby and one that many people find very exciting. Imagine having an exact replica of the Orient Express or the Trans-Siberian Express running around a model landscape you hand built in your basement.
Layouts for model trains are not built overnight. In fact, no model railroad is ever finished. Model train layouts are usually built to a letter scale, such as HO, where 3.5mm on the model represents 1 foot on the prototype (1/87). Model railroads are enjoying a surge of interest and activity from professional designers and artists. It is being played out in the smaller scale world of HO or N scale model trains.
Model railroads are more then just the trains, tracks and power supplies. They provide the enthusiast a way to study and recreate entire worlds and towns in miniature. Model railroads are always constructed, operated, and maintained by people so their movements and access to the layout are as important, if not more so, than the arrangement of the track work.

One train enthusiast might want a model train that runs through a garden outside. Another train enthusiast might have extensive space for spreading out a large set of train tracks and someone else might have a smaller space but wants to fill it with a couple of different train tracks. To fulfill all of these different needs, model train makers have made several different sizes of trains.
The most popular size of the large scale trains is size O. The scale for O is 1/48th. Meaning it is one 48th the size of a regular sized train. The gauge for O is 1 ¼ inches. Many of these larger sized trains are used outdoors in gardens. Of course this does not fill the needs of everyone in the train world.
The HO gauge is half the size of the larger O scale. HO stands for “Half of O”. The HO scale is 1/87. HO trains use the standard size track gauge of 16.5mm. HO scale is a popular size to use in layouts. They are small enough to be able to use creative scenery with well-designed track plans in a reasonable amount of space. But they are also large enough to be able to accommodate a great deal of detail in finer models. They are also large enough for children to handle without the risk of small parts or tiny components being damaged. With the HO scale being able to provide the balance between the detail of larger scales and the lower space requirements of smaller scales, it is a highly sought after railroad line by train hobbyists compared to other scales.
HO scale model trains first appeared in the UK during the 1930's. They were introduced as an alternative to OO scale. But OO scale was already established in the UK and therefore HO scale had a hard time making any real commercial headway. Luckily, the hobbyists of the United States high demand of a realistic based toy during the late 1950's allowed the HO scale model trains to really take off throughout the 1960's and continued right up to today. More then two thirds of train lovers have ranked HO scale as their favorite train scale.
Due to the popularity of the HO scale, a huge array of locomotives, sets, accessories and rolling stock are made by many different companies. Train lovers can find a large array of HO scale train sets with ready-to-run trains and modular track, craftsman grade kits, supplies for building models from scratch, and even high detailed limited-edition locomotive models made of brass. Hobbyists will even go to the lengths of seeking out not only local hobby shop supplies, but look to global suppliers and foreign manufacturers to find that exact piece to complete their layout.
So if you have dreams of seeing a vast landscape with rolling hills or a small town and all of the things you think the towns people of your landscape will enjoy, the HO scale model trains are for you. If you have been checking out the local model train store I?m sure you have discovered by now how the scale system works. The scales of model railroads are basically used to describe the ratio of the model train to the real version. With regards to the N scale model train it has a ratio of 1:148 that makes it one of the smallest scales on the market. They are extremely popular because of the many advantages they offer collectors with limited space.
Space is usually not the only factor considered when beginning a model train collection. However, if you are extremely limited in space the N scale will surely be high on your list of scales to consider. Due to its popularity the N scale has a wide range of accessories available in both cars and extensive landscape options.
The toy model trains available in N scale are also very popular due to the extensive amount of detailing on them. Even though they are one of the smallest scales they are exceptional in detail. If you are looking for something smaller than the N scale then you would need to go with the Z scale model train. The cost of the Z is among the least expensive, unfortunately you will be giving up a great deal of detail since the scale has become so small it is hardly worth being to creative since it is so small you would not be able to appreciate the work.
With the N scale model trains you have a scale that may be just the right size to fit into a compact space and also large enough to see the craftsmanship it possesses with great attention to detail. The N scale has become one of the popular choices for new collectors as well as those buyers who are purchasing the sets for young engineers during the holiday season. Check out your local model train shop to see the N scale in action. They can be used to layout elaborate model railroad systems. A word of caution: The size of the trains can make large layouts difficult due to difficulty with track conditions. There size can create layout problems if the track becomes too large since derailments are more frequent with smaller scales.
While you are at your model train store be sure and check prices on all of the scales. I believe you will find the N class to be very competitive when it comes to larger scale model trains. Since the N class is very popular right now it is manufactured more than other scales and therefore much less expensive. This means it offers great value for money and even though the material utilized is minimal there is an option to create more detail on it. So it's a perfect way to start off when you want to spend limited amounts when delving into this hobby for the first time. Fuel for the N scale model train is available in many different varieties. You may use a live steam engine to power it, which can be fueled with butane or you may find mentholated spirit or fuel tablets made out of hexamine. Some other options for creating steam are using electricity. However, many collectors prefer to use plain ole basic electricity to run their model railway trains. All these options make it a very versatile choice. I am a great believer in playing with different models before diving into model trains as a hobby. So, get your shoes on and get down to your local train shop and play around with different scales until you find a good fit for you. Don?t be afraid to ask the shop owner lots of questions. A good model train shop owner will spend all the time you need to help you begin your new hobby. They want you to be a long-term loyal customer.

Ho Scale Model Trains Bachmann

The Famous Bachmann Model Trains

One of the most famous names in model train history are the Bachmann model trains. The history of the company which made Bachmann a household name goes back way before they started making model trains. The company goes as far back as 1833, though they did not start making model trains until 1966 when the N scale model train started to gain popularity in the United States. Having a history of creating plastic products, the company was perfectly suited to create trains and accessories, which were sold in a plastic shell that was their trademark. Plasticville USA was the first model train product, which put the company into the minds of model railroaders.
Plasticville USA was something, which was sold previous to the first Bachmann model train. These were plastic buildings and other accessories, which would fit in with the trains being sold by other companies. While they were not producing any model trains themselves, it did not prevent them from being known in every home as having fine model train products. These products are still sold in conjunction with model train sets by Lionel to this day. While some may argue the pieces are nothing but mere toys, it opened the door to the ornate layouts created to this day.
While the N scale was the original line of Bachmann models, they quickly made changes in order to expand into the HO scale. They could foresee at the time the HO scale would become the most popular scale to date, which it has. Unfortunately for the company, they were not positioned to sell globally and were losing money. Bachmann Bros. sold the company to Kader who was the manufacturer of Bachmann products. From this sale, Bachmann industries was born and the company began selling globally. Even with a dwindling interest in model trains, the company was able to stay profitable.
In order to appeal to a broader market, the Bachmann model train company came out with a new product line called Spectrum. The Spectrum line was kept completely separate from the Bachmann line in order to cement the product as a luxury model train line. They did not want there to be any relation between the luxury Spectrum line and the Bachmann industries toy model trains which had sold up until that point. These trains offered much more detail at a much higher price. Made of metal with plastic gears, the company was able to keep costs down while building revenue from those who were serious about model railroading.
As an effort to reach the middle of the road, Bachmann model trains began selling Bachmann Plus in 1992. These trains had more detail than the regular Bachmann line, but not nearly as much as the Spectrum line. The creation of the line signified the move of production to China. Eventually the Bachmann plus line was dissolved and was replaced by the silver series. This is the middle grade that is sold today by Bachmann industries for those who aspire to have the Spectrum series, but cannot quite afford it yet.

The huge number of different people who use model trains means that manufacturers have made tracks and trains in just about every size conceivable. It doesn't matter whether you have a whole back yard or just the top of your desk. O is one of the most popular sizes of model trains, at about a 1:48 scale ratio in relation to real trains. These use 1 1/4" gauge tracks. Just like G scale trains, O models are often used for outdoor displays. But not everyone has the space for a garden railroad, or the time to maintain it. If you'd like something a little smaller, but still nicely detailed, you're after an Ho Model Train. About half the size of O scale trains, at about 1:87 of a real one, HO stands for half O. These use standard gauge train tracks, and are very easy to find. They're a very popular choice for floor layouts, and are suitable for creative ones that use plenty of track, but they don't take up too much space. They're still big enough to be durable, too. These trains offer a good balance of the detail of the larger scales of train and the smaller space requirement of the tiny models such as N scale trains. Since this is the most popular scale, it is the easiest to find trains, tracks, accessories and premade layouts for; virtually every company who produces model trains and accessories manufactures them in this scale.
For the hobbyist who wants model trains which offer plenty of detail, are easy to find and easy to build creative layouts for in a reasonable amount of space, HO scale trains are the way to go.
