How To Weather Model Train Scenery

When it comes to weathering, most people only consider the trains and not the model train scenery. If you are purchasing buildings from a store, you will want to weather them as well in order to keep with the appearance. After all, it will look odd for the weathered train to be traveling through a pristine environment. If the train is traveling through the city, the train and the city should both look just as worn by smog and graffiti artists in order to make it look as real as possible.
The first thing you can do in order to weather model train scenery is to use a mixture of paint thinner and a dark gray paint. This paint should be mixed into an airbrush gun in order to spray a light coat of paint that looks like it has been accumulating for years. The best way to apply the paint is in wide sweeping motions side to side. Make sure the room is well ventilated before attempting anything of this sort. For best results, do not try to finish the weathering all at once. Apply one coat, allow it to dry and then apply a second coat. Use as many coats as you feel necessary to create just the right look.
Another city element you may want to add to your model train scenery is graffiti. You can buy different pieces of graffiti from the hobby shop, or online. The graffiti you buy will be in a decal form, so you may want to spray it with the same formula you used on the building it will be on. This will cover the edges and give the graffiti the worn look it usually has in the city. Graffiti is also a good addition to trailer cars. It gives the appearance the cars have been docked in the city rail station for a period of time.
Rail stations that are a part of desert scenery should have a look as if they have seen many different sand storms over the years. A good way to accomplish a sand worn appearance is to shoot sand at the structure. Mix together fine grain sand and water in the bowl of your airbrush gun and use it to blast the structure. Sanding the structure may be too harsh as you can simply scrape the paint off rather than adding a look of wear. Another good element in these conditions is to airbrush on a medium brown color to the metal roof in order to give the rusted over look expected in the climate.
Creating realistic looking model train scenery is an endeavor every model railroader has. It is a skill, which has to be learned over time in order to get it exactly right. The best way to learn is to find as much information as possible about weathering and creating your own structures. Practicing what you learn is the ultimate way to learn. However, if you want to enjoy some fun swimming, there is Splash World at the indoor water park that is another day of total fun and enjoyment.
Water skiing, rowing, cycling and sailing is always available at the Marine Lake. A person who enjoys the water will be able to enjoy watersports all over Southport. Then, there is the stunning Victorian buildings, theatre, Meol's Hall, breath taking gardens and wonderful shops and galleries. The Atkinson Art Gallery is filled with beautiful Victorian and 20th century oil painting and watercolors. There are many pieces of 19th century art at the gallery and a great little shop right next to it to spend some time.
A beautifully restored 400 year old barn is a must see. The Tithe Barn is surrounded by 100 acres of parkland and over two thousand acres of wildlife refuge. A great place with paths and walkways that create a wonderful step back in time. When you visit Southport - Merseyside you will not run out of things to do and see. The people are wonderful and the hotels, B&Bs and self-catering flats are wonderful.

For anyone who is just getting into model railroading, I understand it can be a daunting task. There are just so many different things to consider when deciding on how you are going to start your model railway. That's why I have compiled this article with some of the best model railway tips and advice I can think of. Hopefully by the time you finished reading this, you will have a far clearer idea of your how to go about building your own model railway successfully.
That last sentence point leads me nicely on to the first point too. One of the most important things for newcomers to model railroading is to get a clear sense of exactly what they want to achieve from this hobby. Without clarity, many will find themselves loosing track of why they wanted to get into this pastime in the first place and therefore lose focus on what they are doing and how to do it.
Therefore the first question you need to ask yourself and I hinted at it in the last paragraph is to question why you wanted to build a model railway in the first place. With this clearly in your mind, it will give you something to fall back on when you feel like you're getting a little bit lost with it all and in times of need. For many, building model railroads is a childhood dream, so focus on this and keep the dream alive.
This has got me through many low times when I've become frustrated with my model railway, which inevitably happens to all of us at times and so this is one of the best model railway tips I can give to anyone, beginners and expert builders alike.
With this clearly in mind, you can start looking at some of the other important factors involved in building a model railway, such as where you are going to build your layout and what scale your are going to use. However, before you spend anything I want to suggest my next tip, which is to work out your budget before you do anything else and try your hardest to stick to it!
Otherwise, you will soon find your new hobby running away with your wallet! Be warned, building a model railway can become an all involving addiction. Keeping track of what you spend will help you to keep control of it, so you don't end up spending all the grocery money on that locomotive you really want and then going hungry for a week (even if you did think it was worth it at the time!).
Money is the theme of my final tip too and that is to always buy quality over quantity, right from the start. It's very tempting when you are just starting out to want to buy a lot of different trains, over one good locomotive, thinking it would be nice to have a choice. The thing is, when all of those break down, you'll be left with nothing but spare parts. It's not just good looking trains that I'm talking about here either. Do your research and buy model railway trains that have quality parts throughout. This may be more expensive to start with and you won't have as much choice of what trains to run on your track in the short term, but it will really pay off further down the track.
