Getting Started With Model Steam Trains

Author: David Blackburn

Whether you have been a model railroader for a long time, or just getting started there is some information you need to know before purchasing model steam trains. The way in which you will be using your model train is a very big factor to keep in mind when deciding which kind of steam train you should purchase. The people who will be using and maintaining the train is another big factor in which kind of train you should buy. Obviously, your budget will be a deciding factor in which steam train model you ultimately can afford to buy. This is not only due to the train itself, but comes into play when you are buying the fuel to power your steam train.

The majority of model steam trains are ones that are ridden by people. These trains, which are of the 1:8 scale, are rather large and not practical for most people to use even if they could afford them. They require a lot of room and a lot of track to make owning one even worthwhile. Most people who have a 1:8 scale train have a lot of acres on which they can store and ride their train. For those who have less space, but still want a live steam powered train, there are smaller options available. Manufacturers have even produced Z scale trains, which operate off of live steam. Keep in mind, the less readily the train is available, the more it will cost.

Maintenance of model steam trains is very important to be able to keep your train running properly. This is why it has become popular among the live steam crowd of model railroaders to use fuel that burns clean. It make it easier to keep the train running properly because you are not having to clean a lot of carbon buildup from the exhaust flu. For those looking to have a smaller live steam train, the options mostly only afford clean burning fuel. For the 1:8 scale train, one of the most popular fuel sources is propane. It burns very clean and will not build up in the locomotive causing you problems later.

Being able to buy the fuel you prefer is a very big determining factor for some people who own model steam trains. There are many different fuel cells, which are available through various sources. Propane is a duel source for the 1:8 scale, which is available through such places as the grocery store. Butane is a fuel source used by the smaller scales, which you can also buy from the grocery store. Butane model trains are very popular because they burn clean, the fuel is readily available and the fuel is cheap. Going electric is a very popular option as well because it is possible to have an immersion heater which will operate on as little as 10 volts of electricity delivered through the track.

No matter which of the various model steam trains you choose from, keep safety in mind at all times. Steam is very hot and tempting at the same time for small children. It is very easy to get burned not only by the steam, but also by the locomotive should it be touched at any time. The steam, while contained, is contained by metal and makes the train very hot to the touch. Practice safety when dealing with small children in proximity to your live steam train.

Learning About G Scale Model Trains

Author: Jason R. Dodson

G scale trains belong to the larger-scale models category of model trains. The G scale is one of the largest train replicas in the model train and railroading world. It is even the biggest of the most popular model trains. The G scale model ratio is 1:22. This means that the replica is only twenty two times smaller than its real-life cousin. If you think about it, other models and scales are a whole lot smaller. The O scale, for instance, also belongs to the larger scale models but is just about half the size of G scale model trains – only 1:48 in ratio. To compare, O scale model trains are 16.1 inches long and 3.6 tall; while G scale models are 26.7 inches long and about half a foot high. G scale model trains were developed by Paul Lehmann Patetnwerk, head of the German company Lehmann Gross Bahn – also known by two other names: LGB, or as known in English, Lehmann Big Train. LGB has manufactured model trains since 1881 and has an American branch called LGB America.

Due to its considerable size, most model train and railroaders affectionately refer to the G scale model trains as if it stands for "garden". The letter actually stands for groß, which in German means "big". For G scale model trains, No.1 tracks are used – so do other larger scale trains. The gauge, or the width of the No.1 track, is about 45 millimeters.

G scale model trains are durable ones, so if you're planning on having a railroad track in your backyard, it would be a great scale to choose. The tracks of G scale models are made of brass. These won't require you to do a lot of maintenance. You can simply wipe it with a clean cloth, and the track will be good for plenty of runs. If you have some space in your home, you can put your G scale model train indoors.

Two of the best G scale model train and track manufacturers are Bachmann and Aristocraft. The durability that G scale mode trains are well known for can be put to good use. For instance, it can be introduced to kids by their parents who are model train enthusiasts as well – without the worry for the train getting broken. This makes for a good medium for the family to bond. Smaller scales like the 4.8 inch high 1.1 inch tall N scale models will easily get destroyed by kids, who do not know gentleness towards toys, as opposed to the sturdy G scale – so the latter is a getter choice overall.

Model train and railroading has been around for a long time and manufacturers have created different scales for you to choose which one you like best. This includes the G scale model trains.

The Joy Of Model Railway Trains

Author: David Blackburn

Model railway trains have the potential to play a very big role in your life. There are some who dedicate a lot of time and effort into building trains and layouts from scratch in order to create the most realistic environment possible. For many, it is not even about the finished product that drives them to create. They are made happy simply through the art of creation. People have been known to spend decades working on a single train in order to make it look exactly the way they want it to. The joy you find in your model train is sure to be your own.

Christmas is a time of year in which many homes employ model railway trains to circle the tree. This has become a tradition in families even if they are not model train enthusiasts. Those who do enjoy the hobby a little bit more can be very creative in the Christmas themed layout they create to either go around the tree itself, or on a tabletop nearby. Most can remember the train they had as a child and want to recreate that same memory for their children. Others still want to start a tradition in which they share the fun for generations to come.

While model railway trains can be highly individualistic in nature, it can also be a very good social builder. With many different clubs in existence for those who love model trains, it is possible to find one in your area. It is fun to get out and show off the creations you have while enjoying the creations of others. Talking about model trains with others who enjoy your passion can give you ideas and invigorate you to get back to work on your current project. Model train clubs are a great way for those who are new to get ideas on how to get started.

Sharing your passion for model railway trains is a great way to create stronger bonds between family members. Many fathers have included their sons in projects to create great layouts they can both be proud of. Trips to the model shop as well as the hours spent on the layout create memories, which will be cherished for years to come. The layout itself will stand as a testament to the value of teamwork in creating something you can all be proud of. Chances are if families get involved in a project such as this, they will pass along the tradition for years to come.

For many, the biggest joy of model railway trains is the amount of detail they are able to give it. Being detail oriented requires a lot of attention, which means you will not have the ability to think about other things. Concentrating this hard on what they are doing allow many model railroaders to forget about other aspects of their lives. They view their model trains as a great escape from the daily grind. In fact, most model railroaders look forward to working on their models more then most anything else.

Model Train Hobby Shops and ...

Shopping - a Hobby or an Illness

Author: Karen Phillips

This article is all about my 71 year old mother Annie.  She is, by far, the most generous person you could ever wish to meet in your lifetime, well with her clothes anyway, this is her story….

This shopping HOBBY started about 20 years ago when she was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to visit Texas (my father is an avid Country and Western fan).  She took with her every conceivable piece of clothing you could possibly imagine, she even resorted in filling up my fathers suitcase with her clothes, because if she wanted to, and had the space, she could not have got a racing snake in her suitcase if she tried, it was full to bursting!  So all in all she had got roughly about 40 kg of clothes and shoes for a 3 week holiday.

Upon arrival at their Hotel in Houston, my father suggested they go and have a look around the shops, and as this was the first time either of them had been to America they did not have a clue what to expect…..they very quickly found out and my mothers HOBBY was born!

They had a fabulous holiday, my mother shopping every day in shear awe at what was on offer and at such reasonable prices, and my father visiting all the country music outlets.  She had a very big decision to make when it came to packing her case for their journey home, with baggage allowance limited to just 30 kg each, she was in a dilemma to say the least.  The only compromise was to leave half her clothes and shoes behind at the hotel, of course these were the clothes she bought with her all the way from England, and in their place pack her new American clothes and shoes she had so much pleasure buying.  Of course, she was absolutely devastated at having to leave all her clothes in Texas; after all she had had them for decades, so it was difficult to leave them.  I often wonder what the hotel thought about this, perhaps it was something that happened often who knows.

Back safe on British soil and in the comfort of their own home, she became discontent with her wardrobe facility in their bedroom, surprise, surprise!  As all the children were now grown up and flown the nest, it was a great opportunity for my father to knock two bedrooms into one large room, thereby giving extra room for him to construct larger wardrobes for mummy dearest to fill, and fill she did.

She strutted around the village with her tail feathers fully extended for all to see.  She was so proud of her new trendy clothes she had so much pleasure in buying on her trip to Texas.  Annie delighted in all the lovely compliments she was given by young and old, she had suddenly become interested in Annie.  She had not had a very easy life, she had 5 children by the time she reached the age of 25, this was no mean task to say the least. Her confidence and self-esteem was always put on the backburner because her kids just had to come first and Annie second, it was just her way.  Maybe she had deprived herself all those years of being herself that she actually forgot she was Annie, she just thought of herself as a wife and mother with no rights of her own, perhaps that’s why she gained so much confidence in herself; almost overnight, she had suddenly become an expert in a field she really knew nothing about, but liked the person she had become because of her love for clothes, her newfound Hobby.

Before embarking on her holiday to Texas Annie had no Hobbies, she simply did not have the time to spend titivating herself, her words not mine.  For me and my siblings this newfound mum of ours was a little worrying, she was dressing up every day in her refinery, even wearing makeup….a rarity in those days, and meeting friends for lunch, so you can say she became a Lady who Lunches in a very short space of time, but she did look good, really good, and she knew it, and she made sure everybody else knew she looked good.

It goes without saying the main topic of the ladies conversations at these lunches were Annie’s clothes!  On the days she was not lunching with her new friends she was scouring all the local villages for little boutiques that could supply her with the unique clothing she had become accustomed to buying.  Of course none of them came up to scratch, there simply was no comparison with her Texas boutiques, and she took delight in telling the shop owners too.  On the odd occasions we would be dragged to these shops, kicking and screaming may I add, to be introduced to the proprietors, followed by a spate of gentle abuse from Annie advising the proprietor of how they had no idea than the man in the moon in buying techniques, and that they should take some lessons from the Americans!  Oh Lord, please let a big hole open up from nowhere and let me disappear, I was never that lucky.  Of course her generosity was faultless, we always came away from one of her hobby haunts sporting some new grossly overpriced piece of clothing, these generous gifts gave her so much pleasure, almost as much pleasure as if she was buying it for herself.  It doesn’t stop the guilt though, I would love to partake in her Hobby, suffice to say my bank balance would not survive one day shopping with her let alone everyday.

She outgrew her wardrobes as time went by, the buying of clothes did not slow up she continued EVERY DAY to shop.  When is this ever going to stop we thought.  My father never questions her about her Hobby because it makes him happy that she has finally got the time, money and inspiration to go out every day and shop purely for her, and that is exactly what she did, believe me, every day.

She has now taken over fully the third bedroom in their house with wall to wall wardrobe space, well that was only a matter of time I suppose.  These wardrobes are full of items of clothing, still unworn with price tags still intact.  One of the main things I have forgotten to mention is Annie never buys anything that she would term as cheap; her motto is You Get What You Pay For.  We all know she is right, but none of us can afford to go out to these little Boutiques she frequents every day and pay £100 for a tee shirt, we just cannot justify it, at the end of the day we had a very good teacher, I think she forgets that now.  On saying that, I suppose if I had a particular Hobby which I enjoyed and got as much pleasure out of as she does, and given her age, I suppose I could justify spending the obscene amounts of money that she spends every day, because when all is said and done, it is her only Hobby and it makes her so happy, my dad is not complaining because he knows she comes home every day with a story to tell and an armful of fancy shopping bags…….If she is happy, he is happy, it makes for an easy life.  Bless her heart…This article is written for my beautiful mum who I love with all my heart. I am very proud of her; she is an inspiration to us all, including the proprietors of her chosen Hobby Boutiques.  This is not the end of Annie’s story, it is just the beginning …………….watch this space.

Perhaps this is an IllNESS, we as a family, like to think of it as her Hobby………Unless you know different!

The Top 10 Model Train Shops in Virginia and West Virginia

Author: Larry Truett

For the past year I've been compiling a list of model train stores for my model railroading website.  These shops all look like a lot of fun to visit, but what are the most popular?   Here is a list for the states of Virginia and West Virginia.

The most popular model railroading shops (based on online chatter) in Virginia and West Virginia are:

10. Rick's Hobby Shop in Roanoke, Virginia

9. Chesterfield Hobbies in Midlothian, Virginia

8. Riders Hobby Shop in Sterling, Virginia

7. Whistle Stop Hobbies in Alexandria, Virginia

6. Trains Etc. in Lorton, Virginia

5. Engine House Trains in Virginia Beach, Virginia

4. Main Street Trains in Barboursville, West Virginia

3. KMA Junction in Manassas, Virginia

2. Piper Hobby in Chantilly, Virginia

...and the most popular shop for model trains in Virginia and West Virginia is...

1. Locust Grove Trains in Locust Grove, Virginia

Hobby shops not quite making my top 10 were Awesome RC and Hobbies in Fredericksburg, Virginia; Craftech Hobby Shop in Norfolk, Virginia; Davis Hobby Supplies in Portsmouth, Virginia; Debbies RC World in Chesapeake, Virginia; Dunn's Toy and Hobby in Manassas, Virginia; Hobby Works in Fairfax, Virginia; Leesburg Hobbies and Collectibles in Leesburg, Virginia; Rail Yard Hobby Shop in Roanoke, Virginia; Staunton Trains and Hobbies in Staunton, Virginia; Train Depot in Manassas, Virginia; Train Town Toy and Hobby in Ashland, Virginia; Walt's Hobby Shop in Petersburg, Virginia; Cain's Trains and Hobbies in Bunker Hill, West Virginia; Fountain Hobby Center in Charleston, West Virginia; Kid Country Toys in Charleston, West Virginia; Nitro Hobby and Craft Center in Nitro, West Virginia; Patrick's Trains in Wheeling, West Virginia; Stephens Outdoor Railways in Vienna, West Virginia; and West Virginia Hobbies and Crafts in Teays, West Virginia.

So, there are lots of great model railroading shops from all over Virginia and West Virginia, but clearly Virginia dominated the list with nine in the top ten.  This isn't too surprising as Virginia is a bigger state with a bigger population and more hobby shops than West Virginia.

When in Virginia and West Virginia be sure to visit some of the excellent railroading museums including Eastern Shore Railway Museum in Parksley, Virginia; Fairfax Station Museum Railroad Museum in Fairfax Station, Virginia; Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia; Princeton Railroad Museum in Princeton, West Virginia; West Virginia Railroad Museum in Elkins, West Virginia; and Williamson Area Railroad Museum in Williamson, West Virginia.

I compiled this list by searching for the hobby shops listed on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online.  I further screened this list to include only pages that mentioned model railroading.

See a complete list of Model Train Shops in Virginia and West Virginia, at www.ModelTrainsWithLarry.com which has complete contact information for each shop including an address, phone number, and map to the store.

Keep Your Train on Track with the Correct Model Train Track

Author: Steve Barnett

All trains must have a track to run on. Therefore; it is very important that when you build a model train track layout that you use the right track for the right job.  If you are modeling in the steam era, you will need a turn table or a Y track to turn your locomotive around. Diesel Electric locomotive can run in any direction. When it comes to the radius of the curves is all comes down to the gauge you are modeling.

When modeling in N gauge track, the main line curves should have at least a radius of 11.25". The larger the radius the better the locomotives will negotiate the turns, especially at full speed. If the curves are too tight the locomotive could bind or even derail.

Now let's look at HO scale train track. If you are modeling in steam all 4-8-4 engines need at least a 22" radius. Also the 2-8-4 and 2-10-4's need at least 22" radius. The 2-8-0s, 2-6-2s, 0-6-0s, and 4-4-0s locomotives must have a minimum radius of 18". Most of the diesel electric locomotives in HO gauge must have at least a radius of 18", except for the EMD DDX40AX must have at least a 22" radius. Also, most switchers in HO gauge can negotiate a 15" radius curve.

The O gauge tracks are not measured by radius, but by diameter. For example, 0-27 means the track has a 27" diameter. Most O gauge street cars can handle an 0-27 curve. The PA-1, E7, General Electric Dash 9, Fairbands-Moses, U33C, FP45, SD45, SD90, and General Electric Amtrak locomotive all need an O-31 diameter curve. Whereas, the FA-1, F7, F3, Baldwin Shark, GP9, General Electric Dash 9, GP38, Bl2, NW-2, General Electric 44 Ton, locomotives all need an O-27 diameter curve. Now let's look at the steam locomotive track diameter curves. The 4-8-4,2-8-4 locomotive can negotiate a O-31 diameter curve. Whereas, the 4-6-4 locomotive really needs an O-42 curve diameter track to negotiate the curve without any problem.

The G gauge or Large Scale trains need at least a 4' diameter curve. Theses radius are the minimum for the locomotive that is operating on that track. Even though, this is the recommended minimum curve, you can always model your train track in a larger radius that will make the trains look even more realistic. Also, just because the locomotive can negotiate the curves you have to take into consideration that some long passenger cars may need a larger radius than the locomotive. Remember to make your track look realistic you must ballast the track and install culverts and ditches so that the water can be carried away from the rails. You also need to make sure that you have great electrical connection on your entire track to keep your trains running smoothly as they should. As always remember the main thing is to always have fun when it comes to building your model train layout.

Thanks,

Steve Barnett

MLM Old Model versus New Model—Uncovered

Author: Jerry Newman

There is a reason why the MLM Old Model got replaced by New MLM Models, and that reason is primarily because of the convenience that the new network marketing business model provides. Before, the primary function of network marketing business was to introduce new products and to promote them to consumers. This also includes services to clients who may need them. As the years progressed, added marketing methods began sprouting one after the other. Examples of this includes talking to strangers who are clearly not part or connected to the network marketing in any way, buying leads, conducting and doing public surveys, going to networking events and making lists of family and friends to be invited.

These methods however failed to make the necessary lifestyle changes it was supposed to change which caused its gradual decline. Network Marketing companies failed to grow and all their marketing agents also failed to receive this expected growth. There are still MLM companies who continue using this marketing method, but these methods offer no guarantee because of the inefficiency and ineffectiveness it brings to the market. Although it is still possible to succeed using this method, it requires the following traditional technique, which as a marketer, you may need to work on.

Posture

Since this is networking, how you look will most likely matter here, and you are expected to behave properly and accordingly as a professional. This also includes your posture. How you carry yourself in front of other people plays a big role in your persuasiveness.

Mindset

In order for you to convince other people easily, it is important that you have properly set your mind for your goals. You must have no doubt in your mind, and you must keep upa positive spirit in order for you to succeed. Actually this is what MLM Model vs. the New Model have in common. In order to succeed, you generally have to have a proper mindset.

Listening Skills

This is a very important skill that should not be overlooked. The opinions and feedbacks of the consumers should not be disregarded. To listen to what they have to say, you need to establish proper and effective interaction. You can do this by meeting up with them in person or by effectively structuring your website.

Communication Skills

The best way to draw and convince lots of people to join your network is by maximizing your communication skills. Your communication skills should allow you to be clear, concise and straight to the point in your messages.

Public Speaking Skills

Just like your communication skill, public speaking skills refer to your ability to maintain as composed as possible when you’re in front of people who you do not really personally know. Part of your job is to talk to as many strangers as you can. Public speaking requires confidence.

The MLM Old Model is still incorporated in the New MLM Models. The success will depend on how you try your best to meet the following points and how you are able to execute them in real life.
