The N scale model trains are one of the smallest and most delicate of all model trains. They are small but they also offer many advantages over the larger scaled model trains. As you know, small can often be better when it comes to trains and track size, depending on your free space available.

 

If you have a very limited amount of space at home, then you might need to choose the N scale, as you have no other options. The N scale is actually the smallest of the four possible model scales that you can select and build with. However, the small scale can actually work to your advantage.

 

For example, the small scale means that you can fit a larger amount of track into the same amount of space. This means that you can run more trains, add more track and also create more scenes within your railroad layout. If you are keen to have a big network of track, then the N scale is perfect for you.

 

There is really no point having a large-scale train set if you are only able to display a small section of it. This does not make sense. You will have much more fun with the N scale when your space is limited.

 

There are also many advantages to the smaller model trains. The N scale model trains are detailed in a much more realistic way. Many people comment on how the N scale trains have the most detail from any of the model train scales. The finer aspects of the real trains are transplanted to the model trains when you buy from the N scale.

 

In fact, it is for this reason that many experienced model train hobbyists like to collect the N scale. They want to have their model trains as close to the real thing as possible so they choose to run and collect the N scale. This is a huge advantage to you if you enjoy having strong detail and realistic trains on your track.

 

The next advantage of the N scale is that it is very practical and easy to construct. It is much easier to put together than many of the other model train scales. It doesn’t require a lot of skill, as the track sections are very small. This means that you can quickly create different track layouts and redesign your current railway line.

 

The effect that is produced from the N scale model train track is also fantastic. Because the track layout is so small, it gives you a bird’s eye view of the train network, which is something the other scales do not offer.

 

So, if you are a beginner, then the N scale makes sense. You can get started right away, don’t need much space, and you can do everything yourself as it’s very simple to put together. This means that you can have all you want with the N scale, so don’t worry that your space is limited.

 

As you can see, the N scale model train makes perfect sense for hobbyists at all levels of the skill scale. Experienced people and beginners will really enjoy it.

For a model train and railroading newbie, the terms scale and gauge can seem quite complicated. Don't worry as these are all pretty basic, and actually easy to understand. As you go on with your model railroading hobby, you'll be joining the veterans in scale and gauge discussions.

Your interest in model train and railroading will inevitably bring you to the topic of sizes.  Model trains come in various sizes as they are used for different purposes. There will be a lot of choices for you, so you'll have an easy time finding the one you want. While there are different sizes of model trains, manufacturers do not create them at will – they follow sizes in accordance to popular scales and gauges. Scale is the size of the model train. It is a scaled down replica. It is the scale of how much smaller it is compared to the real train, and is designated with letters.

The N scale is a really small scale. N scale is the smallest among the most popular scales. It has a ratio of 1:160. This means that the N scale model train is one hundred and sixty times smaller than the real-life train. The more popular HO scale is just about twice the size of the N scale.  HO scale has the 1:87 ratios. The N scale is for model railroaders that would like to spend more time designing the scenery of the layout, and benefits the enthusiasts who do not have a lot of space for their layouts. N scale model trains may take less space, but the level of detail in them, depending on the manufacturer, is still high. There are also a lot of accessories and miniature add-ons that you can throw into your layout that will complement your N scale trains. The biggest advantage of N scale trains is you can create really beautiful scenery.

Popular scales like the O scale, the HO scale, and the standard scales are about a hundred years old, while N scales were only created in the 60s. The letter N stands for nine millimeters – in reference to the size of the gauge. The gauge is the size of track that the model train runs on. It is the measure of the width of the track. Along with gauge, you'll hear the word "code" often, which pertains to the height of the track.  

N scale models are good for the more creative model railroaders – you can focus on designing the scenery rather than the train. The choice is all yours in terms of the scale you'll use. The purpose of different scales is to suit the needs of the hobbyist – the enjoyment is very important.

When you decide to buy and collect N scale model trains, you need to know that you will be dealing with the smaller type of model trains. The N scale is the smallest of the four possible model scales that you have to choose from.

 

The N scale is 1:160 ratio of the original, or in other words it’s one sixtieth of the real train. If you are not sure about which scale to buy and use then here are a few reasons that the N scale might be good for you.

 

Firstly, the obvious thing is that you will have much more space with the N scale. The size of the track and model trains means that you can fit a good-sized layout into any room. This also means that you can collect more features and accessories for your layout. Adding scenery to the model railroad is a great way to give it a more realistic look.

 

Of course, if you have limited space, then you are restricted by the scenery you can add to your layout. With the model N scale track, you should be able to accommodate for most of your needs and track plans.

 

Another benefit that collectors of the N scale model trains like is that they seem to have more details. As the N scale model trains are much smaller, the locomotives and cars appear to be much more detailed in the finer aspects. Of course this depends on the manufacturer of the trains and how well the locomotives are modelled.

 

Another important factor to consider is that the smaller N scale seems to give another dimension to the model train experience. As the trains and track are so small, there is a certain experience that is given off, that is often not found with the larger scales.

 

For ease of use and practicality, the N scale is great. It is much easier to construct and put together. You can also create more elaborate track layouts as the track is much smaller and this means you can easily experiment with a number of different designs.

 

It is very easy to quickly add more track, redesign the layout, move pieces around and re-construct the layout should you wish. With the larger scales, this would take a lot more planning and become very time consuming indeed.

 

The effect that is created by the smaller track and trains is incredible. The small size gives a very realistic effect and often looks like you are taking an aerial view of the entire train system in operation.

 

N scale model trains are also great for beginners as it allows them to get started much more quickly. As I said, the N scale is much easier to layout and is more intuitive to put together. It still requires some skill to arrange the track and create a functioning layout but it does not require the experience of the larger scales.

 

If you are thinking about which model train scale to choose, then the N scale is definitely worth trying out.

N Scale Model Trains - Are They Really That Different In The Uk And Japan?

The N scale model train is a popular model railway track/scale gauge that ranges from 1:148 - 1:160 depending on the country or the manufacturer. Although the scale may vary, the gauge, or space between the rails, is normally 9 mm. The main advantage of the N scale model train is that the layouts take less space than the HO scale model trains.

So what are the different variations of the N scale train? While these trains vary from country to country and based upon the manufacturers who produce these trains, several examples of different versions are as follows:

The 2 mm Scale

The 2 mm scale is a variation that is more common in the United Kingdom. The 2 mm is scaled at 1:152 or 2 mm per foot with the track gauge measuring 9.42 mm. To put this scale into perspective, the 2 mm scale is slightly smaller than the standard British N scale (1:148) and slightly larger than the European/American N scale (1:160). In addition, building a model railway set using this scale requires skill since this particular scale does not have great deal of parts and components available.

The "OOO Scale"

This scale was first introduced to the United Kingdom by Lone Star Toys in 1957. The initial trains, affectionately called "Lone Star Locos", were designed by Stuart Gross and were one of the first models in the UK to use the 2 mm scale. These trains were made out of die-cast metal and did not initially feature an electric motor; they were push-operated to begin with. Then, in 1960, Lone Star introduced the Treble-O-Lectric brand, featuring electric-powered British diesel locomotive models. The Treble-O-Lectric trains marked a significant milestone in British model train history because these trains would set the precedent for British N "gauge" 10 years ahead of the competition.

The Japanese N Scale

N scale is the most popular scale in Japan. The main difference in Japan is that the N scale trains use a standard of 1:150. This particular scale represents the 3'6" gauge common to real life railway trains in Japan. One noted exception to this standard is the Japanese Shinkansen model train or high-speed "bullet trains". The model version of the Shinkasen uses a 1:160 scale instead.

These examples show the degree of N scale variation internationally. However, despite these differences, most hobbyists agree that the N scale model train is one of the most popular scales. It is no wonder that there are even discussion groups and associations focused entirely on this particular scale!

What is the key to a successful ho scale model train layout?  Is it a bunch of expensive ho scale model train engines racing around the train track or possibly the gauge you choose?  I believe the key to successful model railroading is creating the model railroad to fit your personal tastes.

There are many types of scenes you can create for your ho scale model train set.  Do you like urban scenes?  If so, you might want to build an ho scale model train layout with a huge city and have your ho scale model trains running through city buildings and stopping at a large urban model train station.  Your ho scale  model train could weave its way through downtown on its way to the many houses you construct for the suburb.  You could even have more than one ho scale model train station.

Perhaps you like rural settings.  You can have your ho scale model train work its way through a country landscape consisting of farms and ranches.  Your ho scale model train will have cattle cars to pick up the livestock at each of the ranches  where your model train stops.  The farms might have an old white farmhouse and a big red barn straight off a picture you would see in a book.  The scenery will have many varieties of trees around the farmhouse.  As your ho scale model train leaves the farm, it will travel through crop field scenery you have created on its way to the processing plants.  The possibilities of a rural ho scale model train layout are endless and only limited by your imagination.

My personal favorite  ho scale model train layouts are hills and mountains.  There is nothing like seeing that ho scale locomotive  coming around the curve out of the tunnel in the mountain you have built from scratch.  Another favorite mountain scene is the ho scale model train going over a bridge of a deep gorge through the mountains on its way up the tracks.  You can put all kinds of pine trees in these mountain scenes to make them lifelike.

We could go on forever but, hopefully I have spurred on your imagination and possibly even given you some ideas to make your ho scale model train layout special to you and those who get the opportunity to watch your trains in action.  Remember, choose the  ho scale model train layout that best fits your personality and let your  imagination do the rest.  Good luck and happy model railroading.

Model trains are not only for kids: Adults are very much a part of this world. Consider joining a local model train club. Model trains are some of the most enduring toys of all. They are so enduring that even adults love them. Model trains are offered in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors. These models often feature sophisticated electronic components that make them elegant and realistic in operation. In fact, the latest models are controlled by computers.

Model trains are fun for both young and old--men and women. The hobby bridges the generation gap and can be a great way to bring the family together! Model trains are a very interactive hobby, where users can create elaborate model railroad layouts. Modelers develop numerous skills associated with modeling trains. Many people enjoy putting together a model train display, in a landscape or village setting.

Model train layouts are way more compelling when there are people doing it together. Every person comes with a different skill: wiring, modelling, painting, kit-bashing, computer programming, painting or air-brushing; decals, historical accuracy, mechanics, design, sculpting, making tiny trees, tiny rocks, or tiny people. A 'fast clock' is used so that 24 hours may be compressed into a 3 hour operating session. Join a club and remember that model railroading is fun!

Most often model trains are collected according to scale. A scale is a ratio expressed in terms of one unit on the model equals a specified number of units in real life. The most popular scale is HO at 1/87 of real size. Model trains are an amazing hobby and one that many people find very exciting. Imagine having an exact replica of the Orient Express or the Trans-Siberian Express running around a model landscape you hand built in your basement.

Layouts for model trains are not built overnight. In fact, no model railroad is ever finished. Model train layouts are usually built to a letter scale, such as HO, where 3.5mm on the model represents 1 foot on the prototype (1/87). Model railroads are enjoying a surge of interest and activity from professional designers and artists. It is being played out in the smaller scale world of HO or N scale model trains.

Model railroads are more then just the trains, tracks and power supplies. They provide the enthusiast a way to study and recreate entire worlds and towns in miniature. Model railroads are always incorporating new concepts and the techniques. The controls are now based on microprocessors like miniature PC's. Are N Scale Model Trains Right for You?

Many people think that the N scale train is not as good as some other more popular scales, like HO. These same people are older folk who may not see as well, or may have arthritic hands.

It is true that these trains are small, only 1:160 scale, but the N scale trains are ideal for people who don't have a lot of space, but still want a really decent layout. You can do a lot with a simple 8'x4' space.

Many say that there aren't as many resources for spare parts and accessories, but that really isn't true. You may not find everything you're looking for at your local hobby shop, but you will find many basic sets available.

For all of your scenery, and miniatures, just go online and look on any search engine. You will not only find just as much products and the HO model trains, but some products you just can't find in larger scales.

Now the first thing you should know right away, N scale model trains, being 1:160 scale, are going to have a large amount of small parts, as well as being an electrical hobby. You will have to make sure you are working away from children under ten, and then only with supervision.

For these sets and layouts, it would be a good idea to put together the layout first, and then show it to the kids. First thing is to get a good basic train set. You have a bunch of choices to choose from, including passenger trains, and freight.

This is also an ideal scale for trains with many cars, because the cars are lightweight, yet highly detailed. You can choose a variety of engine and car designs and styles, including special holiday additions.

The holidays are a good time to pick up more unique sets. You can find holiday accessories, and even complete layouts, with festive engines and cars, carolers, snow capped buildings and much more.

Some of the have mechanisms that actually work, like miniature clock towers, and buildings that play music. Many of these are battery operated, and require no extra power, another really good feature about the N scale trains.

Now if you want a good basic layout, assuming you had all the right tracks and materials on hand, here is a good layout for a 32"x40" area. You will need a total of 63 pieces of track with 24 Atlas-N R-11 30 degree curved tracks, 17Atlas-N R-9.75 30 degree curve track, 4 Atlas-N 0.63inch straight track, 8 Atlas-R 5inch track, and on Atlas-N 2.5 inch straight track.

You will also need 6 Atlas-N #2701 standard #4 right hand turnouts and 3 Atlas-N #2700 #4 left hand turnouts. It is basically four ovals inside of each other, with the third center oval actually a double oval, There is only a one way switch back from the outside, with two sets of switchbacks on the central ones.

You can get this and many more design plans online, that have basic layouts, with just a few decorative ideas, like river crossings and a few suggested plants and buildings. Any of these you would of course have either on hand, or on order.

Model trains come in many different scales, which is the ratio between the real thing and the model train. One of those scales is the N class that is second only to the most popular HO model. According to the scale chart the N class ratio is 1:148 irrespective of the particular train that it is imitating.

One of the major problems that train collectors generally face is finding the right kind of space where they can display their model railroad layout. The fact that the N scale model trains are small in size allows them to be displayed on a relatively small surface. Collectors have said that this is one of the biggest factors contributing to the popularity of this scale. Even collectors living in apartments may find the space to put up a layout.

A big advantage of the N scale is that, due to its size, it allows you to create a detailed railroad layout. The size is perfect, since it is large enough to display sufficient detail in the locomotive and cars and yet small enough to allow for an extremely elaborate model railroad layout with very detailed topography and cities. In other words, it is not so small that you can't work with it, and yet, not so large that you can't manage it. Hence forth, for many collectors, it is the perfect fit.

N scale model trains are also preferred because of the high level of detailing that can be found on them. It is important to know that the N scale is not the smallest of the model trains. The Z scale model trains are much smaller and may be a good fit for people with very little space. Those who purchase the Z scale will compromise on the quality of the detail to the train, as they do not offer the realistic visible aspect that you are able to find with the N scale.

Price is yet another advantage of collecting the N scale model train over the HO or other larger trains. In recent years this particular scale has gained a lot of popularity and the net result is a reduction of the selling price. Since it has become so popular, the overall production of the N scale toy model train has increased. And with all markets price is driven by supply and demand. Since supply is up manufacturers are selling them at a lower market price. Furthermore, you will be able to find a wide variety of accessories catering to this scale at an affordable price.

There are also a wide variety of fuel choices in the N scale model trains. Electric powered trains are by far the most popular. For collectors, the electric model is also considered to be the best choice. Steam powered models are also very popular in the N scale along with an electric version that creates a steam effect.

The N class has been around since 1927 although it was not commercially produced until 1962. If you are considering getting into model railroad collecting the N scale may be the perfect fit for you. I would suggest that you visit a model train show in your area before you begin to invest in this hobby. Getting off to the right start will on increase your enjoyment of this great hobby.
