The Joy of Bachmann Model Trains

Author: Steve Barnett

Waking up Christmas morning with a Bachmann model train set under the Christmas tree is one of the great joys of being a kid. You can hardly wait for your parents to help you put the track together so you can run the train. The train comes with a basic oval of track that is easy to put together. In just a few minutes you have the track together and the train waiting for you to hook the power pack to the track. The power pack is hooked up and you turn the throttle and the train begins to slowly move down the track getting faster and faster as you increase the throttle on the power pack. You are now hooked on model trains as you watch this one go round and round the track. You want to go as soon as possible to the hobby shop to buy extra track and maybe a couple of turnouts so you can expand the size of the track. When you get to the hobby shop you find more rolling stock and locomotive than you ever thought existed. From this small train set you begin a trip down that model train road that never ends.

As your train transforms into a layout, you start trying to make it more life-like. You build a small town with building, roads, automobiles, and people. At the edge of town is a switch yard with many box cars, gondolas, flat cars, and hopper cars waiting to be hooked up to the locomotive in order to retrieve all types of freight from factories and other town to bring back to this town to keep it thriving. A passenger train slowly pulls away from the depot loaded with town people and visitors from other towns returning home. The train picks up speed and roars through the country side, past farms and rural communities. You can hear the sound of the massive locomotive as the train begins climbing it way up the mountain side. The train reaches the top of the mountain where you can see the whole valley below. As the train starts down the mountain it travels by a long freight train waiting on a siding track for the passenger train. The passenger train stops at the next small community to pick up some passengers. There is a freight train in the switch yard picking up loads of logs from a near-by logging camp. Also some empty hopper cars that had been loaded with coal and are now ready to be returned to the coal company.

All of this track, locomotives, rolling stock, buildings, trees, people, and other accessories all come from a manufacturer called Bachmann Industries. This company was founded in 1833 by Henry Carlisle. Later the company merged with another company owned by Henry G Bachmann. Bachmann's sons later entered the business which was called Bachmann Brothers. The company has change ownership several times over the years. Today most of the Bachmann Industries, products are made in China under their parent company name the Kader Industries. Bachmann industries sell more model train products than any other. So if you are interested in model trains, Bachmann industries probably makes just what you want. Remember when modeling railroading always have fun

Happy modeling,

Steve Barnett

How to Take Care of Your Model Trains

Author: John Vanse

All the components necessary to build up a successful model train layout are expensive - locomotives, rolling stock, tracks, power controllers, buildings, landscaping, to list just some - these are all expensive. It is no wonder that the hobby of setting up and maintaining a model train collection is considered one of the more costly hobbies that you can become involved in. However, that does not stop many thousands, may be hundreds of thousands of people, spending a considerable amount of money on their model train collections.

Because of the significant amount of money you will have invested in establishing your model train collection, it is essential that you should take all the necessary measures to ensure that it is properly cared for. You would not want to have your investment to end up in the trash.

You will find that taking good care of your model train collection will save you a significant amount of money for repair and maintenance in the years to come.

The following simple guidelines should remind you of the basic essentials of the good habits you need to develop that will help take care of your very valuable model train collection and maintain it in prime working condition:

• make sure you store the most expensive parts of your model train collection - the locomotives and rolling stock -all the wagons, carriages, etc in a safe place when they are not in use. They should preferably be in a cupboard or containers to prevent dust and moisture affecting them. If you have your model train layout in your garage or in a basement, make sure it is damp proof;

• make sure you always wipe dust and dirt off the model train collection components. Use a soft cloth or a soft sponge when doing this. This will help prevent dirt accumulating, particularly in many of the surface ridges. An accumulation of dirt can potentially, over time, destroy the paintwork and can inhibit the proper functioning of any of the individual items;

• if you are using batteries to operate your model train, as many people still do, take them out of the train if you will not be using your train for some time. Batteries leak if not in use for a period of time. The leakage could damage the model train because the chemicals in batteries are harsh and abrasive;

• if you are operating electric control of your trains, make sure the tracks which carry the current are kept clean. Otherwise the proper functioning of your model train layout can be severely affected;

• let the locomotive of your model train run on its own power. Try to avoid touching a locomotive when it is operating. Doing so can often cause damage to the motor.

While you may find that the tasks of maintaining your model train collection properly, such as keeping it clean and safely stored, are somewhat tedious, and tend to detract from the enjoyment you get from having and operating your model trains on your layout, the development of good maintenance habits will, in the long run, add to your enjoyment by providing a well functioning, good looking model train collection.

And - it will save you money by not requiring costly replacements for poorly functioning components.

Scale Model Trains: What Does That Mean?

Author: Michael Weston

Model trains are available in a variety of different sizes that are denoted as scales. This spectrum of sizes ranges from miniature train sets to large models that designed to be set up outdoors. There are two terms used in association of collecting model trains, they are gauge and scale. Scale is used to describe the ratio of a model to the actual train that it depicts and gauge refers to the track width.

When it comes to model railroad collecting the choice of scale is usually the most important aspect that needs to be decided before the collection can start. It is a matter of personal preference as well as experience and don't forget what may be the most important part of the equation, which is your budget. Although there are many different scales available for you to choose from the HO is one of the most popular.

The HO model train scale is by far the most common amongst the scales. The approximate ratio of HO model trains is 1:87. You will also be able to find variations in the HO scales. The HO is popular since it comes in various gauges and is very easy to work with. The detail is outstanding and the size of the train is somewhat like a popular fairytale. It's size is not to small, it's not to big.....it's just right!

Not only will you be able to find HO model trains with utmost ease but also one of the biggest advantages of sticking to this scale is that you will easily be able to find a wide variety of accessories with which you can enhance your model train display.

Next in line on the popularity chart is the N scale model trains. The N scale has the ratio of 1:160 that makes them considerably smaller than the HO. For my taste the N scale is to small and the detailing on the locomotives and cars is not as intricate as on the HO scale. One other detail that should be mentioned is that accessories for the N scale are much less available than for the HO and other model trains because their small size makes them complex and difficult to work with and the number of units sold has reduced worldwide demand therefore making this a difficult train to collect. However there is one big benefit with this standard and that is the fact that you can set up an extensive railroading track in a relatively small space. The N scale tends to be more popular with kids and individuals that have limited space to work with and are not interested in large detailed railroad layouts.

The other three scales in the fab five list are the O (1:48), the Z (1:220) and the big daddy himself, the G (1:24). There are other scales available but are not considered to be big collector items since their popularity is so small. The fewer retail units sold means fewer accessories. Collectors tend to lean toward the fab five and then it is the individual's personal taste in scale that seems to be the determining factor in their collection. So spend some time and consider your space, your budget and your personal taste and come on aboard.
